The sad and disgusting story of Vaalwater is one of overflowing bins and skips, and a landfill/re-cycling depot which is inoperative. The municipality, Modimolle, buries it’s head in the piles of rubbish and ignores all pleas, requests or demands for some action. Its own town is clean; at the end of each day the street traders clean up and there is very little litter to be seen. This is not the case for the poor relative, Vaalwater.
The sterling efforts of Yvette Muldoon’s Dream Vaalwater Team - Yvette, Retha van der Merwe and Anne Scotting - have been thwarted and overwhelmed by the Modimolle municipalitys total lack of support. There are other (all private) initiatives which are attempting to beautify and keep the town clean, but Modimolle municipality is a no-show.
This is a serious matter, the piles of rubbish are not just unsightly and a turnoff for tourists but a grave health hazard. It is a common sight to see children playing amongst the garbage - no doubt alongside the rats and other disease carrying vermin.
This must be a matter of grave concern for everyone who lives in the Waterberg, not just for Vaalwater residents; this is after all the only town and the entrance to our many tourist destinations.
There are other matters too: the terrible condition of the town’s roads, the plethora of signs - many probably illegal - at the entrance and through town, unkempt verges and yes, litter everywhere.
It is time for our community to take-up these issues with the Modimolle municipality and the Provincial Government - copy the Premier’s Office, it does help.
